Akisa Architects is a multidisciplinary architectural firm committed to designing spaces that inspire, empower, and serve. Founded in June 2005, our name is drawn from the Tsonga word “akisa”, meaning “to assist in building or developing.” This philosophy is at the core of everything we do.
From our studio in Polokwane, we’ve contributed to infrastructure development across South Africa—particularly in under-resourced communities. Our work bridges form and function, creativity and accountability, delivering human-centred solutions for both public and private sectors.
Whether designing a healthcare facility, school, civic building, or modern home, we approach every project with a deep respect for context, culture, and community. Our goal is not just to create beautiful architecture—but to shape sustainable environments that make a lasting impact.

Meet the Director
Theri N. Miyeni
Principal Architect | BArch, BAS | SACAP Registered | Member of CIOB
Theri Miyeni is the founding architect of Akisa Architects. With a Bachelor of Architecture (2000) and a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (1996) from the University of Cape Town, Theri brings over two decades of experience in delivering impactful, sustainable design across South Africa.
His leadership is grounded in a deep understanding of community development, infrastructure delivery, and architectural innovation. As a registered professional with SACAP and a member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Theri continues to guide the studio with technical excellence, social awareness, and a commitment to purpose-driven design.
